টিকা বা ভ্যাক্সিনেশন সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত নিম্নে উল্লেখ করা হলো:
বহিরাগত জীবাণু (ভাইরাস, ব্যাক্টেরিয়া) সংক্রমন থেকে দেহকে রক্ষা করার উপায়কে ভ্যাক্সিনেশন বলে।১৯৭৬ সালে ড. এডওয়ার্ড জেনার সর্ব প্রথম গুটি বসন্তের ভ্যাক্সিন আবিষ্কার করেন।যে জীবানু দ্বারা কোন রোগ সৃষ্টি হয় সেই রোগের জীবাণু বা জীবাণুর অংশ বিশেষকে দূর্বল করে জীব দেহে প্রবেশ করিয়ে দিলে জীবদেহ সেই জীবাণুর দেহে রোগ প্রতিরোধ ক্ষমতা তৈরি করতে পারে।
টিকা বা ভ্যাকসিন কোন ঔষধ নয়।এটা হল আমাদের দেহের প্রতিরক্ষা ব্যবস্থাকে শক্তিশালী করার একটা উপায মাত্র।ভ্যাকসিনের মাধ্যমে আমরা আমাদের প্রতিরক্ষা ব্যবস্থাকে দেহের রোগ জীবাণুর সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিলে আমাদের প্রতিরক্ষা ব্যবস্থাকে সহজে জীবাণুদের চিনতে পারে।ফলে আমাদের দেহে সহজেই জীবাণু দ্বারা আক্রান্ত হয় না।
