খাদ্য প্রজনন ও অনুকূল পরিবেশ প্রাপ্তির লক্ষ্যে প্রানীদের একস্থান থেকে অন্য স্থানে গমন এবং পরবর্তীতে পুনরায় সেখানে ফিরে আসাই হলো মাইগ্রেশন।শীতপ্রধান দেশে শীতকালে বরফ পড়লে পাখিদের খাদ্যের অভাব দেখা দেয়৷ফলে সেসব পাখিরা বেঁচে থাকার জন্য কাছাকাছি কোন দেশে চলে যায়।শীতের পাখিরা খাদ্য ও অনুকূল পরিবেশের সন্ধানে হাজার হাজার মাইল পাড়ি দিয়ে অন্য স্থানে গমন করে।পরবর্তীতে পরিবেশের সংকট কেটে গেলে আবার নিজের আবাস ভূমিতে ফিরে যায়।
শীতকালে বাংলাদেশে সাইবেরিয়া ও অন্যান্য শীতপ্রধান দেশ থেকে অভিপ্রয়াণ করে পাখিরা বাংলাদেশে চলে আসে।এ সময় এ পাখিরা এ দেশে বাসা বানায়,ডিম পাড়ে,বংশ বৃদ্ধি করে।পরবর্তীতে গ্রীষ্মের আগমন ঘটলে এ পাখিরা আবার নিজ দেশে চলে যায়।মা পাখিদের সাথে এদের বাচ্চারাও আমাদের দেশ ছেড়ে নিজ দেশে চলে যায়।
